Paddling an outrigger canoe takes more than just muscle. It takes six individuals working as one. When thoughts and motion come together, and the 40-foot boat glides forward, the resulting feeling is one that can't be replicated. In 1996 a group of paddling friends longing for that special feeling got together and founded the Seattle Outrigger Canoe Club. In the years the followed, the club has competed in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and all over the Pacific Northwest Region. Team members have also raced at the national and international level in competitions like the Molokai Challenge in Hawaii, the Gorge Games in Oregon, Catalina Island, Lake Tahoe, and Kona. Outrigger paddling in Seattle means steam rising off Lake Washington, racing on Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains as a backdrop, and bald eagles flying overhead. In Seattle, canoe paddlers have the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding of unique waterways such as Lake Washington and the Puget Sound. In the Pacific Northwest, teams in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia compete frequently during the spring and summer and gradually start traveling to meet their California and Pacific Island competitors as the season progresses. SOCC paddlers practice three times a week from April through October as daylight permits. Did you say you wanted to try something new this year? Spend it with us on the water! |
